Tips to avoid stress and tension while exercising

Updated: Jun 5, 2022

If you are looking to tone your body and improve your heart health, it is important to keep things in perspective. "When you're stressed, you don't have the energy to do what's healthy for your heart," says registered dietitian Lisa Drayer. "So, try to reduce the number of things that stress you out." Here are a few tips to help:

1) Make a list of your goals and priorities. When you know what you want, it's easier to focus on taking care of yourself. This also helps prevent burnout, which can lead to negative health effects.

2) Set realistic goals. Don't overdo it when starting out; be sensible and gradually increase the intensity as you get stronger. If at any time during your workout you feel like you can't go on anymore or are feeling really tired, stop and take a break before continuing.

3) Get plenty of sleep. It's important to allow your body time to restore and recover after a tough workout. Try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day so your body has consistent hours of darkness and light. This will help regulate your body's natural rhythms.
